Following the success of the first season of Hawkeye on Disney+, many fans have been wondering why a second season hasn’t materialised. Now, Jeremy Renner, who stars as Clint Barton, has shed light on the situation in a candid interview with High Performance, revealing that while a second season was indeed discussed, the terms were far from ideal.
Renner confirmed that he received an offer for a second season of Hawkeye — but with a significant caveat: the proposed salary was just half of what he earned for the first season. This reduction, he suggested, may be linked to his health status following a serious accident in early 2023.
On New Year’s Day 2023, Renner was run over by his own snowplough while attempting to help his nephew in the snow. The accident left him with 14 broken ribs, a shattered thigh bone, fractures in his ankles, and injuries to his shoulder and collarbone. His recovery was long and physically demanding.
Reflecting on the pay dispute, Renner made a pointed remark:
“I said, ‘Excuse me? Do you think I’m only half of Jeremy now just because I got run over? Maybe that’s why you’re only offering me half the pay.’”
He made it clear that the controversial offer didn’t come from Marvel Studios directly, but rather from Disney’s accounting department.
“I told them where to go… just based on how insulting that offer was. We couldn’t come to an agreement.”
Despite the frustration, Renner hasn’t closed the door on returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“The sad part is, I still love the character. I’d still love to do it. But I had to stand my ground. I wasn’t asking for more — just the same pay as season one.”
Renner’s comments strike a chord with fans who not only admire his portrayal of Hawkeye but also respect the resilience he’s shown since his life-threatening accident. For now, the future of Hawkeye season two remains uncertain — not due to lack of interest from the actor or fans, but seemingly because of internal decisions at Disney.
