Not Just Anime: New Godzilla x Kong Film Title Unveiled, Disney Rethinks Its Marvel Strategy

*Warner Bros. expands its Monsterverse with a new sequel, while Disney CEO Bob Iger acknowledges recent missteps in the MCU. Meanwhile, two Teen Titans films are in the works.*

Warner Bros. has officially revealed the title of the next instalment in its Monsterverse franchise. The upcoming sequel to *Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire* will be titled *Godzilla x Kong: Supernova* and is scheduled for release on 26 March 2027. Production is already underway. One of the key surprises is the addition of Sam Neill—renowned for his role as Alan Grant in the *Jurassic Park* series—to the cast.

Released in March 2024, *Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire* opened to an impressive $80 million at the US box office during its debut weekend, taking the top spot. The film went on to become the highest-grossing entry in the Monsterverse franchise, with $570 million earned globally, surpassing 2017’s *Kong: Skull Island*, which grossed $568.8 million.

Meanwhile, Disney CEO Bob Iger has openly acknowledged that much of Marvel’s recent output has been underwhelming. Despite this, he expressed optimism, suggesting the studio is on the verge of a creative revival. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which launched 17 years ago, now includes 36 films and several TV series such as *WandaVision* and *Loki*. The 2010s saw a steady increase in releases—up to two films per year—but following *Avengers: Endgame*, the pace accelerated dramatically.

Since then, audiences have been flooded with Marvel content, particularly through Disney+, with up to four films and multiple series being released within a single year. According to recent reports, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has conceded that the studio may have overproduced, leading some fans to view keeping up with the MCU as more of a chore than a source of enjoyment.

Some of the blame has been attributed to former Disney CEO Bob Chapek, whose strategy reportedly favoured quantity over quality. This approach placed considerable strain on Marvel Studios’ internal processes. With Feige having the final say on all creative decisions, a bottleneck formed, resulting in sub-par content and a growing disconnect with audiences.

However, changes appear to be in motion. Bob Iger now believes that *Thunderbolts*, which is currently receiving positive attention, could mark the beginning of a new era for Marvel—one focused on quality over volume. While the studio may continue releasing around three films annually, the production of large-scale series for Disney+ is expected to be scaled back. Although shows like *Daredevil: Born Again* will continue, there is reportedly less emphasis on building interconnected narratives like those seen in *Loki*.

In related news, DC Studios is also ramping up its output. Earlier this year, DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran confirmed a live-action *Teen Titans* film is in development. However, that’s only half the story. In addition to the live-action project, an animated film is also in the works, continuing the legacy of the long-running *Teen Titans* series.

The news was casually dropped by Warner Bros. Pictures co-chairman Mike De Luca during an episode of the *SmartLess* podcast. “I think James and Peter are working on a live-action *Teen Titans*, and actually, a new *Teen Titans Go!* as well,” said De Luca, speaking alongside fellow co-chair Pam Abdy.

It’s worth noting that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav separated DC Studios from Warner Bros. Pictures back in 2022, meaning De Luca and Abdy are not directly involved in either Titans project. Nevertheless, Warner Bros. Pictures will continue to distribute DC Studios films in cinemas, including the upcoming *Superman* and *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* titles, and remains informed about other upcoming projects such as the *Teen Titans* films.

Finally, Universal Pictures International Italy has released the IMAX trailer for *How to Train Your Dragon*, the live-action adaptation of the beloved 2010 animated film. The film is directed by Dean DeBlois, who also helmed the original trilogy. Following its preview screening on 8 June, the live-action version is set to debut in Italian cinemas on Friday 13 June.
