New ‘You Were Never Really Here’ Trailer: Joaquin Phoenix Gets Violent in Cannes Hit

Amazon Studios has dropped a new trailer for You Were Never Really Here, an upcoming drama-thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix and some bloody hammers.

From writer-director Lynne Ramsay, known for Morvern Callar and We Need to Talk About Kevin, You Were Never Really Here follows a traumatised veteran (Phoenix) who uses his skills to track down missing girls. His latest job gets more complicated than planned.

The reviews have been highly positive for this dark-looking picture, and the trailer shows off a little as to why. Ramsey’s direction looks potent and Phoenix – as usual – looks to be putting in some solid work. Phoenix took home Best Actor at Cannes, where the film was also handed a Best Screenplay win (tied with Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of A Sacred Deer).

The horizon holds a few very different roles for Phoenix. The three-time Oscar nominee may be laying the smackdown here, but he’s playing Jesus Christ elsewhere.

You Were Never Really Here, also starring Ekaterina Samsonov, Judith Roberts, John Doman, Dante Pereira-Olsen, Alex Manette, and Alessandro Nivola, will open in the US on April 6.

Synopsis for You Were Never Really Here:

A traumatized veteran, unafraid of violence, tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe’s nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening.
