Disney/Lucasfilm are looking to give Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi a standalone movie.
A Kenobi-focused Star Wars spinoff movie is reportedly in the works over at Disney, although it’s all in the very early stages.
THR reports that three-time Oscar nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry has entered early talks to direct, co-write the screenplay and oversee the development of the film. Daldry’s credits include Billy Elliot, The Hours, The Reader and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. He’s also attached to direct Universal’s planned adaptation of the hit musical Wicked.
The character of Kenobi was originally inhabited by Alec Guiness, who earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for the part. Ewan McGregor played a younger Kenobi in George Lucas’ three prequels.
Since the project is just kicking off, there’s no word on who will be playing Kenobi this time around. McGregor has already expressed his interest in reprising the role, telling EW back in April, “There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything. But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it.”
This potential feature will mark another spinoff focusef outside the Skywalker family trilogies. The first spinoff Rogue One showed that audiences would flock to standalone Star Wars pics, as evidenced by the film’s impressive worldwide box office draw of $US1.05 billion.
