‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ Trailer Unveils Another Colourful Disney Adventure

The first trailer has arrived for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, an upcoming fantasy-adventure from the studio powerhouse that is Disney.

Based on the 1816 story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by German writer E.T.A. Hoffman and the 1892 ballet adaptation The Nutcracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the film tells of a girl who discovers a parallel world containing three realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. She meets a soldier, Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), and the two head on a journey to brave the ominous fourth realm, home of the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to bring harmony to the world.

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland immediately comes to mind here – at least when it comes to the visuals. While this writer wasn’t a big fan of that film, it’s worth noting that it pulled in over $US1 billion at the box office, so audiences were clearly keen. If they’ve got something somewhat similar here, expect more big bucks for Disney. The trailer is careful not to give away too much, but it does show off what looks like a colourful, lavish outing. There’s a nice supporting cast, too. We’ll see.

Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules, Chocolat) directs from a screenplay by Ashleigh Powell.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms will open in the US on November 2, 2018.

Official synopsis for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms:

All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift from her late mother. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy and featuring a special performance by Misty Copeland, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale. In Cinemas November 2018.
