Mark Wahlberg & Michael Bay Say ‘Transformers 5’ is Their Last

It appears that the upcoming Transformers film will be the final in the franchise for both actor Mark Wahlberg and director Michael Bay.

Following further confirmation from Michael Bay that Transformers: The Last Knight will indeed be his last Transformers film as director, Wahlberg has revealed that the film will also be his final chapter in the series.

“This is the last one. This is the last Transformers,” Wahlberg said while on The Graham Norton Show. “Michael and I have vowed that this is it. So I get my life back.”

The actor entered the franchise with 2014’s Age of Extinction, which raked in a huge $US1.1 billion worldwide. Leaving after The Last Knight means he’ll fall short of the three films Shia LaBeouf starred in.

Wahlberg’s comment that The Last Knight is “the last Transformers” is clearly referring to his own involvement, since we still have a number of films set to expand the universe.

First in the lineup for the next phase of Transformers films is Bumblebee, to be directed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings). The spinoff, which will reportedly be set in the 80s and will star Hailee Steinfeld as a tomboy mechanic, is scheduled to hit the U.S. on 8 June 2018.

The “I get my life back” comment from Wahlberg echoes a little bit of what Bay had to say recently.

“These movies that I’ve done, they are massive movies. They take a lot out of you,” Bay told Fandango. “I’ve done it enough, and I’ve had a great time doing it. I’m going out with a bang on this one, and I feel like you gotta go out while you’re ahead, you know. I think I’ve had a good run, and I’ve got a lot of other movies I want to do.” To be clear, Bay isn’t leaving the franchise altogether; he’s still staying on board as producer.

As to what’s next for the filmmaker: a violent assassin movie could be on the horizon. “I just read a very bloody hit man movie that was a page turner. That seems like a fun one to do,” Bay said.

Time will tell if Bay really stays away from the director’s chair for future installments. After all, the director did flirt with leaving the series after Age of Extinction.

Transformers: The Last Knight will open in the US on June 21 and arrives in Australia on June 22.
