Here’s the Crazy Amount ‘The Lord of the Rings’ TV Show is Expected to Cost

Amazon’s planning to make HBO’s Game of Thrones look like a pretty small series.

In case you hadn’t heard, Amazon last year bought the rights to deal with three big timers: New Line Cinema, massive publisher HarperCollins, and, most importantly, the Tolkien estate. They beat out Netflix with a $US250 million offering to bring an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings to the screen as a series. New Line, by the way, was brought into the deal since Amazon wanted the freedom to use material from the films.

Ambitious, to be sure. Amazon agreed to not only fork out that $US250 million, but to also commit to five seasons and to have the production underway within two years. Word is that there’s also the potential of a spinoff series as well.

Amazon’s aiming high, really high. In fact, this thing’s shaping up to being the most expensive television series ever made. According to an article by THR, the series is expected to cost… wait for it… over $US1 billion. Yeah, billion. Like, with a ‘B’.

There’s no word on whether or not LotR filmmaker Peter Jackson will be on board, but there’s a chance. According to THR:

His attorney Peter Nelson was not a part of the 2017 rights negotiations but recently helped start a dialogue between Jackson and Amazon.

Jackson’s six films (3 LotR films and 3 Hobbit films) pulled in a whopping $US5.85 billion in worldwide box office receipts. It’s no wonder Amazon is looking to tackle this with everything they’ve got.
