Well, it’s not much of a surprise, but it’s nice to hear the confidence from the man himself.

Director and writer James Gunn has confirmed that Marvel will indeed be tackling a third Guardians of the Galaxy film. In an interview with Complex, the filmmaker expressed that a threequel focusing on the Guardians was almost a certainty, although he was very clear to point out that a number of things have to be figured out.

“There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”

So, it appears there might be some figuring out that needs to happen here.

Gunn also shed some light on how much importance the Guardians will have in the next Avengers film, Avengers: Infinity War. Basically, it sounds like the team won’t have a ton of screen time, but they’re still going to be a downright important element of the plot thanks to Josh Brolin’s big purple bad guy, Thanos.

“I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos’ stories, so, they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but, an integral part to that,” Gunn said.

And as to how much input Gunn has regarding how his babies are treated without him at the helm? Those worried that the Guardians will be mishandled – anyone? – without Gunn directing needn’t fret.

“I’m an Executive Producer on Infinity War,” Gunn pointed out. “I’ve been working hard with the Russo brothers, with the Marvel guys, with Kevin Feige, to make sure that any of the characters that I’m involved with, that are in that movie are well taken care of and are as funny as they should be, and is are as honest and truthful as they should be. So I’ve been dealing with them all the time. I’ve been talking to the actors on set every single day as we go through production, and it’s been a great experience so far.”

Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will arrive in Australia on April 25 and hits the US on May 5.

Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled for US release on May 4, 2018.
