The second installment of the Wizarding World, which is aiming to have five chapters, finds the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) out of custody and gathering followers with one particular agenda: raising pure-blood wizards to rule over non-magical beings. It’s up to Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his former teacher, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), to thwart Grindelwald’s plans.

Director David Yates has certainly made this universe his own. The filmmaker stays at the helm after having directed the last four Harry Potter films and 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. If all continues to go well, he’s expected to continue as director on the next three chapters.

As far as first trailers go, it’s a pretty good one, nicely driving up the hype by dropping a number of enticing snippets without unveiling too much of the plot – and keeping a lot Depp’s villain under wraps.

The first Fantastic Beasts was a hit, but it wasn’t quite as massive as many were expecting, coming in as the second-lowest earning film in the (at the time) 9-film Harry Potter universe. Still, it made a nevertheless impressive $US814 million worldwide. We’ll see how the sequel compares.

The J.K. Rowling-penned Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, also starring (deep breath) Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, and Poppy Corby-Tuech, will arrive in Australia on November 15 and opens in the U.S. on November 16.

Synopsis for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald:

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™.

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
