The first full trailer has dropped for Downsizing, the next feature from filmmaker Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants, Nebraska).

What would happen if scientists figured out how to shrink humans in order to help the world’s over-population issue? Well, perhaps Payne has an answer or two in this Matt Damon-starring comedy-drama-sci-fi that looks amusing, unique, and oh-so Payne, despite him tackling a decidedly out-there premise.

Early reviews from the Venice and Toronto film festivals have been quite positive for the pic, which Payne has penned alongside regular collaborator Jim Taylor (Election, About Schmidt). It certainly looks great, seemingly delivering on the laughs the concept could provide while looking at a number of social/personal issues in the process. Consider us enticed.

Downsizing, also starring Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis, will open in the U.S. on December 22 and arrives in Australia on December 26.

Synopsis for Downsizing:

Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a solution to over-population, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world, and with the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.
