Paramount has dropped an enticing new trailer for Annihilation, upcoming sci-fi from Ex Machina writer-director Alex Garland.

Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s acclaimed novel of the same name, Annihilation tells of a biologist (Natalie Portman) who agrees to enter a mysterious quarantined area in order to find out what exactly has been taking out previous teams and left her husband hanging on to life.

This looks great. The visuals and overall tone are on point, and some of the film’s dark turns look… well, pretty damn dark. Much-loved source material, a great cast and the writer of 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Dredd making his sophomore film as director following the highly lauded Ex Machina. Bring it.

Annihilation, also starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac, will hit Aussie cinemas on February 22 and opens in the US on February 23.
