The series, an adaptation of Richard K. Morgan’s cyperpunk noir novel, is set more than 300 years in the future, in a time when consciousness can be digitised and downloaded into new bodies. In other words, immortality. Joel Kinnaman stars as Takeshi Kovas, a lone-surviving soldier whose mind has been imprisoned for hundreds of years. A wealthy man, Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), offers Kovacs the chance to live again by putting his mind into a new “sleeve”. Nothing’s free though, and Bancroft gives Kovacs a mission: find out who murdered… well, Bancroft.
There’s a nice dose of Blade Runner on offer in this depiction of the future. A lot’s being kept under wraps, but there’s some highly enticing snippets shown off. Kicking off with an ad of sorts for this technology is a nice touch, before we get a look at some of what we can expect from this expensive production.
Esquire has reported that each episode “is expected to cost between $6-7 million”, which puts it high up there for a Netflix series.
“It’s pretty much Netflix’s biggest endeavour,” Kinnaman told Yahoo. “They’re really going to be able to create a world that’s got a bigger budget than the first three seasons of Game of Thrones. […] It’s something that’s never been done before, and I’m a big fan of intelligent sci-fi. To see a sci-fi show that’s a hard R-rated sci-fi show with a big budget, so they’re really going to be able to create this entire world… I just started drooling at that possibility.”
Yeah, we’re in.
Altered Carbon also stars Renee Elise Goldsberry, Martha Higareda, Ato Essandoh, Chris Conner, Will Yun Lee, and Dichen Lachman and hits Netflix on February 2, 2018.

Synopsis for Altered Carbon:
Based on the classic cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan, Altered Carbon is an intriguing story of murder, love, sex, and betrayal, set more than 300 years in the future. Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned – on ice – for centuries until Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder … that of Bancroft himself.
