App developer Rovio Entertainment has released a press release announcing that Jon Vitti will be directing the film based on the best selling app, Angry Birds. So, who exactly is this Vitti guy? No, he’s not one of Tony Soprano’s buddies. He’s actually an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer that has worked on King of the Hill, The Larry Sanders Show and The Office, but it’s his work on The Simpsons and The Simpsons Movie that he is most known for. Oh yeah, he also wrote Alvin and the Chipmunks and its sequel – but never mind that.

John Cohen (Despicable Me) and former Marvel exec David Maisel will serve as producers on the 3D animated film.

The Angry Birds app has been downloaded over 1 billion times across all platforms, making it the most successful paid app of all time.

A look at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them.

With a cast that includes the likes of Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Chris Cooper, Sam Shepard, Benedict Cumberbatch (he’s in everything now isn’t he?) and Ewan McGregor, and direction by John Wells (director of the impressive 2010 drama The Company Men) we can’t seem to find any reason why this shouldn’t be high on our Must-See list.

A smart teenage girl comes of age in a small town with her self-centered parents who had her when they were teenagers.

This looks like it could be a decent little drama. It’s good to see Danes back on the big screen and Marsden is a likeable enough actor, maybe this drama is what he needs to get more noticed?

Lucy (Bolger) is a self-confessed tomboy that is considered one of the guys with her masculine haircut and attitude. She gets on well with her father (Marsden) but is frequently separated from him for months on end when he works in Canada. Her relationship with her mother (Danes) is easy-going provided she keeps the house tidy. Her mother’s lenience even allows her daughter to drive her car, even when she is too young to apply for a license.

As Lucy turns 14, she becomes more in tune with her sexuality and her family dynamics. She develops a type of friends with benefits relationship with her best friend Kenny. She also ditches her tomboy image, embraces make-up and grows out her hair. She begins to realize that her parents marriage is not as solid as she had imagined. She realizes that her father’s extended stays abroad are not typical of other fathers. Furthermore she realizes that her mother does not pine for her father as much as she does herself. In fact, her allegiance to her father is tested when she discovers her mother is enjoying a romance with a colleague.

She pro-actively seeks sexual satisfaction after she is left with a void when Kenny has to move away. She also begins to realise that there is more to her father’s extended stays in Canada than she had previously imagined.

Check out this great new trailer for The Wolverine. There’s plenty of new footage and we get a pretty clear look at the Silver Samurai. Not too mention the return of a certain female character. What’s not to like?

Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

Halle Berry stars as Jordan Turner, an experienced 911 operator whose life is changed when a phone-call she receives ends badly. Months later, she receives a call from a girl who has been kidnapped. The girl is calling from the boot of her kidnapper’s car and it is up to Jordan to not only save her, but to bring this man to justice.

As far as popcorn thrillers go, you can’t really go wrong with this suspenseful flick from director Brad Anderson. Anderson, director of Session 9, Transsiberian and The Machinist (his best film), racks the tension up every chance he gets and succeeds in putting you on edge. The direction is slick and the camera work provides plenty of nerve-wracking moments. The entire sequence with the girl in the boot of the car is truly nail-biting. In fact, for the most part this film is a relentless ride that barely gives you a moment to breathe.

In saying that, every time the film does slow down it allows you to see the loose gears holding it all together. The story, while being entertaining and pretty intriguing, doesn’t hold up throughout the whole film. There’s plenty of clumsy holes left in the screenplay and the characterization of the villain feels as though he was taken out of another horror flick and plonked in this one. And what’s with Turner’s boyfriend? Seriously, he doesn’t actually add up to a thing.

Halle Berry is solid as our heroine. She’s quite convincing as an operator who must overcome her past trauma to save this young girl. Speaking of the young girl, Abigail Bresilin (looking much more grown up from the little girl she was in Signs and Little Miss Sunshine) gives a strong performance as the victim of the film.

Like so many films of this sort, the ending doesn’t quite do the film justice. After a mostly entertaining and thrilling ride the last quarter sags towards a horror finale that seems tacked on.

Overall, The Call is a decent little thriller that mostly delivers on the thrills and chills. It’s just a shame when a movie fizzles out at the end.
